A Harmonious Blend: Newari Architecture for a Modern Client

In the heart of a serene hillside setting of Lele, an architectural narrative unfolded that bridged cultures, histories, and personal passions. Our client, a proud individual of Indian origin and Christian faith, had long admired the intricacies and timeless beauty of Newari architecture—a style deeply rooted in Nepal’s rich cultural heritage. Driven by this admiration, he envisioned his leisure home to be a reflection of this traditional art form, embodying the elegance and craftsmanship of Newari design.

The project came to us at a critical juncture. The structure was mid-construction, but discrepancies in its execution had left it far from the envisioned Newari aesthetic. Recognizing the mismatch, the client entrusted our team with the task of steering the project back on course, ensuring his dream was realized without compromise.

We began by meticulously assessing the existing structure, identifying elements that could be salvaged while proposing significant modifications to align with Newari architectural principles. The design incorporated iconic features such as intricately carved wooden windows (tike jhyal), terracotta brick facades, and ornate struts (tunal) that added depth and character to the exterior. The roofline was reimagined with the sloping profiles and layered details characteristic of Newari temples and traditional homes.

Inside, we extended the Newari influence through thoughtful detailing. Warm tones of wood, brick, and natural stone dominated the material palette, creating a cohesive flow from exterior to interior. Custom furniture and decor elements, inspired by Newari motifs, were crafted to complete the narrative.

Throughout the process, we ensured the home’s design remained sensitive to the client’s personal identity. Subtle Christian symbols were integrated into the decor, seamlessly blending with the Newari elements, creating a space that resonated deeply with the client’s spirituality and love for heritage.

The result was a harmonious synthesis of tradition and individuality—a leisure home that not only honored the legacy of Newari architecture but also stood as a testament to our client’s unique journey and aspirations. For us, this project reaffirmed the transformative power of architecture: to bridge worlds, tell stories, and create spaces that truly belong.
